Prominent Kremlin critic faces criminal charges
MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian tycoon who has financed a newspaper critical of the Kremlin and supported the opposition was charged over an incident during a TV talk show a year ago in which he punched another businessman, the country's top investigative agency said Wednesday.
Alexander Lebedev faces charges of hooliganism and assault, the State Investigative Committee said. In Russia, filing criminal charges marks the start of a criminal probe, which may or may not lead to a trial.
He posted a scan of the official document outlining the charges against him on his blog, but wouldn't make any immediate comment. Lebedev, whose net worth was reported by Forbes magazine to be $1.1 billion, made his money in the banking industry. He has financed Novaya Gazeta, which is fiercely critical of the Kremlin, and British newspapers the Independent and the Evening Standard.
Lebedev's son, Yevgeny, tweeted that his father is "being targeted by people who don't like his stance against corruption, and hate Novaya."
Lebedev himself said last month that he was forced to sell his assets because of pressure by Russia's Federal Security Service, the main KGB successor agency. He said the pressure was rooted in corruption investigations by Novaya Gazeta, alleging that some of its officers were involved in corruption.
Lebedev and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev own a 49 percent stake in the newspaper, while the remaining shares are controlled by Novaya's staffers. Novaya Gazeta's relentless criticism of the Kremlin, and its investigations into official corruption have put many of its journalists under fire. Four of Novaya Gazeta reporters have been killed since 2000, including Anna Politkovskaya, a fierce critic of the Kremlin and its policies in Chechnya who was gunned down in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building in 2006. Others have been harassed and attacked.
Lebedev has also supported Alexei Navalny, a charismatic anti-corruption crusader and blogger who was a key driving force against massive protests in the past winter against Vladimir Putin's rule. Lebedev, a KGB veteran like Putin, so far has avoided blaming the president for his woes, blaming security services for the campaign against him.
Lebedev owns the National Reserve Bank and also has a stake in Russian flag carrier Aeroflot as well as his own Red Wings airline.

The Other U.N. Meeting: ITU Chief Again Rebuffs Internet Takeover ...
NEW YORK ? If they weren?t before, the members of the United Nations should now all be aware of the powerful real world implications of free speech on the Internet.
As President Obama said in his remarks to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, referencing the notorious anti-Muslim film ?Innocence of Muslims?: ?Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views - even views that we disagree with.?
But across town on Monday and earlier over the weekend, another world leader was attempting to toe a fine line between Internet security, increased development and freedom of expression.
Hamadoun Tour?, Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the global telecom standard-setting agency that actually predates the U.N. (founded in 1865 to coordinate global interoperability of the telegraph), spoke on Monday at Columbia University about an upcoming conference in which representatives from the 193 nations that make up the U.N. will get together to revamp international communications regulations for the Internet era.
That conference, the World Conference on International Telecommunications 2012 (WCIT-12), is the first time that the nations are rewriting international rules for telecommunications since 1988, before the rise of the commercial Internet.
But the conference, which is to take place in Dubai from December 3 through 14, has also drawn suspicion and criticism from U.S. lawmakers and advocacy groups who believe that proposals for rewriting the regulations submitted by more centrally-governed nations including Russia, China, Iran and other Arabic countries, indicate that these nations want to use the opportunity to codify measures that would enable them to police Internet content, meter Internet traffic at international borders, and essentially attain U.N. blessing to crack down on dissenting voices.
Tour? and the ITU have repeatedly rebuffed these notions, but apparently not enough: Tour??s speech Monday was titled ?Myths and Reality,? and he used it to try and articulate what he thought were the benign, yet important, matters at stake at the WCIT-12 conference.
?The conference has attracted an enormous amount of interest and media coverage - especially here in the United States, but not always for the right reasons,? Tour? said in his speech, later adding:
Let us focus on what WCIT is really about.It is about accelerating the rapid deployment of broadband to ensure that many more of the unconnected are given a voice online and that the transformative power of broadband is accessible to all the world?s people.
This is very much in line with ITU?s day-to-day activities which are already fundamental to promoting Internet growth.
Tour? also said that the conference was about, ?the free flow of information? and ?continuing to promote a harmonious and conducive international environment that drives innovation? and ?accelerating the rapid deployment of broadband to ensure that many more of the unconnected are given a voice online.?
However, Tour? also repeated his assertion that the WCIT-12 conference and the ITU?s daily activities also involved ?security standards, including standards to combat spam.?
It?s precisely codifying regulations and international agreements to fight spam and other network disruptions in the context of cybersecurity that worry some U.S. lawmakers and freedom of information advocates, including Eli Dourado, a research fellow at the George Mason University Mercatus Center and co-founder of WCITLeaks.org, a website critical of the ITU that publishes leaked regulations proposals.
Dourado earlier this summer wrote on the blog Tech Liberation that an international agreement on fighting spam ?would create an international legal excuse for governments to inspect our emails.?
?We need to remember that any security standards that are included in the ITRs [international telecommunications regulations], with whatever intentions, will be used by some member states for their own purposes,? Dourado tweeted to TPM on Tuesday. ?This might include censorship or political repression.?
The ITU has also repeatedly pointed out that its role is only to facilitate international discussion about telecommunications standards and development, not to make any decisions, which the member nations must agree to by broad consensus.
At the same time, the ITU is openly working to spur the growth of broadband Internet connections around the globe, particularly in developing nations.
On Sunday at the Yale Club in New York, Tour? attended and presided over a meeting of the ITU?s Broadband Commission, a collaboration with UNESCO established in May 2010 to help meet some of the telecommunications connectivity levels for developing nations set in the U.N.?s Millennium Development Goals.
The meeting saw the release of the first-ever ?State of Broadband? report, which collects and summarizes broadband installation rates on a country-by-country basis around the globe for the year of 2011. The report found that fixed internet subscriptions totalled 589 million in 2011 and that out of 5.97 billion mobile subscriptions, 18.3 percent were mobile broadband, but that mobile broadband subscriptions are growing by a rate of 60 percent year-over-year.
The report goes on to lay out specific ?advocacy targets,? including ?making broadband policy universal ? by 2015 all countries should have a national broad plan or strategy,? and ?making broadband affordable,? by having developing countries pass laws or policies to ensure entry-level access to broadband amounts to less than 5 percent of household?s monthly income.
Overall, the ITU?s Broadband Commission wants to see 60 percent of the world?s people online by 2015, with at least 50 percent access to developing nations and 15 percent to the least-developed.
The report didn?t touch on security, but when asked by TPM about the ITU?s role in ensuring networks are secure while simultaneously open to dissenting voices, Tour? responded in part with the following statements:
?This is a fundamental issue,? Tour? said, ?We?re trying to address it globally, because its a global problem and you can only have global solutions?In security matters, you have also unfortunately some wide differences in terms of even definitions of security?you have differences in definitions of freedom across countries; cultural or religious differences that make those understandings different. To be frank with you, in order to avoid entering into a long debate on those issues where its clearly not working, my job was to try find one area where we agree. This is why we launched the Child?s Online Protection initiative. Children, everyone agrees on that.?
The Child?s Online Protection initiative (COP) was launched by the ITU in 2008, and aims to coordinate best industry and policy practices when it comes to keeping kids safe online, while still encouraging access.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded international action to stop the war in Syria, telling a somber gathering of world leaders Tuesday that the 18-month conflict had become "a regional calamity with global ramifications."
In his state of the world speech at the opening of the U.N. General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting, Ban said he was sounding the alarm about widespread insecurity and injustice, inequality and intolerance in many countries.
Putting the spotlight on Syria, the U.N. chief said "the international community should not look the other way as violence spirals out of control."
Ban said the Syrian conflict is a serious and growing threat to international peace and security that requires attention from the deeply divided U.N. Security Council.
Russia and China have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Syrian President Bashar Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, leaving the U.N.'s most powerful body paralyzed in what some diplomats say is the worst crisis since the U.S.-Soviet standoff during the Cold War.
The secretary-general also expressed profound concern at continuing violence in Afghanistan and Congo, increasing unrest across west Africa's Sahel region where al-Qaida has made inroads, and the "dangerous impasse" between Israelis and Palestinians that may close the door on the two-state solution.
The "shrill war talk" by Israel in recent weeks, in response to its belief that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, "has been alarming," Ban said, and Tehran's rhetoric threatening Israel's existence is unacceptable.
"Any such attacks would be devastating," he said, reminding the 193 U.N. member states of the need for peaceful solutions and respect for international law.
"Leaders have a responsibility to use their voices to lower tensions instead of raising the temperature and volatility of the moment," he said.
Alluding to the recently circulated amateur video made in the U.S. which attacks Islam and denigrates the Prophet Muhammad, Ban said that "in recent days we have seen hate speech and violent responses that perpetuate a cycle of blind violence."
He lamented that in the world today "too often, divisions are exploited for short-term political gain" and "too many people are ready to take small flames of difference and turn them into a bonfire."
The secretary-general said it's time for responsible political and community leaders and ordinary citizens to speak out.
"The moderate majority should not be a silent majority," Ban said. "It must empower itself, and say to bigots and extremists alike: 'you do not speak for us.'"

NEW YORK (AP) ? Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney is unlikely to win Bill Clinton's vote, but that doesn't mean he can't soak up a bit of the popular former president's luster.
The two men stood side by side Tuesday as Clinton introduced Romney before the GOP candidate's speech to Clinton's annual global conference in New York. Clinton recalled working with Romney to save AmeriCorps, and praised the former Massachusetts governor's efforts to persuade fellow Republicans to support the national service program.
Romney, taking the podium, returned the compliment.
"If there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," he said, prompting loud laughter and applause from the crowd.
It was a clear nod to Clinton's speech praising President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., earlier this month, and the slight uptick in the polls that Obama enjoyed soon after.
"All I have to do now is wait a few days for that bounce to happen," Romney quipped.
Such moments of bipartisan levity have been rare in a campaign marked by harsh accusations, heavy-handed rhetoric and relentless attack ads between the presidential campaigns and the outside groups that support them.
Obama's campaign currently is running one such ad against Romney that uses a clip of Clinton's convention speech where the former president says Romney wants to "take us back to the policies that got us into trouble in the first place."
But any resentment was noticeably absent Tuesday as Clinton and Romney appeared chummy, patting each other on the shoulder and chatting onstage after Romney's speech.
"That was good," Clinton told the man hoping to dislodge Clinton's party from the White House.
Before the speech, Romney spoke backstage with Clinton and Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, said Romney spokesman Rick Gorka. He declined to say what they discussed.
Clinton has an outsized influence on the presidential election more than a decade after he left office. Both Obama and Romney have pointed to Clinton's economic leadership as an example for the nation, citing prosperity and a federal budget that was balanced under his leadership.
Clinton is using the full weight of those credentials to boost Obama's bid. In his convention speech, he systematically rebutted Romney's attacks on Obama, accusing the Republican of pushing an economic plan that doesn't add up.
The Obama-Clinton political alliance was back on display a few hours later when the two Democrats shared a handshake and a hug on the same stage where Romney had spoken earlier in the day.
Normal protocol, Clinton said, would require him to simply introduce the president and then be quiet.
"I just want to make one comment. I'm going to finish that speech I started in Charlotte," he said, poking fun at himself over a sermon that at times seemed like it might never end.
Obama, before beginning a wrenching speech about human trafficking, thanked Clinton for the warm introduction.
"Although I have to admit," Obama joked, "I really did like the speech a few weeks ago a little bit better."

Vegas books: $300M+ changed hands with NFL call
LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Las Vegas oddsmakers say $300 million or more changed hands worldwide on a controversial referee call that decided the Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.
Sports book chief Jay Kornegay said Tuesday that bettors at The LVH casino registered shock, some celebration, then anger when the outcome swung the game in favor of Seahawks bettors.
"We've seen regular refs blow calls. That's always been part of the sport," Kornegay said. "But this one was just a blatant bad call at the end of the game that decided the outcome of the game."
The Seahawks won 14-12 after referees ruled that Seattle receiver Golden Tate came down with the ball in a pile of bodies in the end zone after a Hail Mary pass on the play's last game.
The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4?. Had the final play been ruled an interception ? as many players, analysts and fans believed was the right call ? Green Bay would have won by 5 points.
The officials ruled on the field that Tate had simultaneous possession with Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, which counts as a reception. The NFL upheld the call on Tuesday.
"I'm not complaining, but it did feel a little dirty," said Wesley Wong, 25, of Toronto, who said he had a combined $1,000 on the game on wagers on Seattle and a low scoring total.
Gambling expert RJ Bell of Las Vegas-based Pregame.com said an estimated two-thirds of bets worldwide were on the Packers, with about $150 million more bet on Green Bay than Seattle.
"Due to one call by the replacement refs, the bettors lost $150 million, and the bookie won $150 million for a total swing of $300 million on one debatably bad call," Bell said.
Mike Colbert, head oddsmaker for Cantor Gaming, which runs seven sports books in Las Vegas and provides betting lines to 90 percent of Nevada's casinos, said Cantor's books took in about 20 percent more money in bets than usual for a Monday night game after a wild weekend.
Wong said he made a last-minute parlay bet on Seattle and the under to try to make up for losses on Sunday.
Colbert said that as an NFL fan, he felt for bettors who lost because of the play even though his sports books won money.
"When everything went down, I gotta tell you, I was absolutely sick to my stomach," Colbert said.
Casinos had already begun to react to replacement officials before Week 3 began, predicting the most scoring ever across the league.
Now, adjustments for replacement referees that were only talked about previously are being factored into betting lines, Colbert said.
"We've seen it now," Colbert said. "If we do see trends and we see bets, we'll move more aggressively than we did in the past."
Teams normally get a 3-point edge factored into the line when they play at home. That home edge could be worth a half-point more with games refereed by replacement officials, depending on the game, Colbert said. Colbert said he believed the Monday night referees got caught up in the excitement of Seattle's home crowd.
"I'd be willing to make a big bet that if that game is in Green Bay, that play is overturned and they win it," he said.
Bettors are also reacting. Wong said he's wagering 20 percent less on NFL games than usual because of the unpredictability of the referees and other factors. He said his friends are cutting their bets in half or talking about avoiding NFL wagers for a few weeks if the replacement officials stay in.
"I'm willing to put less at risk at this point," Wong said. "I'm not motivated to put that much on the table."
Johnny Avello, race and sports director at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel-casino, said plays ? and mistakes ? happen each week throughout the year that decide the outcomes of bets. But this moment was magnified, he said, because it happened at the end of the game and the call single-handedly decided the outcome.
"If you're a bettor, it's going to be hard to get over," he said. "Some may back off, and that's yet to be seen."

EU Court Asked To Rule On Legality Of Downloading From Illegal Sources
As part of a case between several computer media companies and the organization responsible for copying levies, the Dutch Supreme Court is set to seek the advice of the European Court of Justice concerning the right to make private copies. Currently it is considered acceptable for Dutch citizens to download copyrighted material for personal use, even if that content comes from an illicit source such as file-sharing networks. A ruling in the wrong direction could change all of that.
Last week the Dutch Supreme Court decided to refer some interesting questions to the European Court of Justice. The responses it receives back could have some serious implications for the tolerant environment currently enjoyed by file-sharers in the Netherlands.
The case involves argument over the country?s private copy levy, which sees Dutch citizens granted the right to carry out personal use copying in return for rightsholders picking up revenue from levies on blank media.
These levies are set through negotiation between a foundation representing authors and composers on one side, and producers of blank media on the other. In the most recent round the argument was raised that the current levy should also extend to cover downloads made from illegal sources, i.e from online file-sharing networks.
As confusing as it might sound, downloading from illegal sources is considered legal in the Netherlands. That notion was underlined in December 2011 when the Dutch parliament adopted a motion to keep downloading movies and music for personal use legal, and considering a situation where current copyright levies could be extended to downloading-related hardware such as hard drives.
?The Court of Appeals held that downloading from an illegal source is itself legal, mainly because the Secretary of Justice had repeatedly said so in Parliament and the language of the private copying article (from the Copyright Act) did not require a legal source explicitly,? Arnoud Engelfriet, a lawyer specializing in Internet law at the ICTRecht law firm, told TorrentFreak this morning.
However, the Supreme Court now makes the observation that the EU Copyright Directive may consider that copying from an illegal source is self-evidently illegal, so it has referred the matter to the European Court of Justice.
The Supreme Court has asked the ECJ several questions including whether private copying can only be legal if carried out from a legal source.
?[If we] suppose that?s the correct reading, can the Dutch then go further than the Directive and also legalize home copying from an illegal source? Or is *only* the Directive the source of legal acts within copyright law?? Engelfriet explains.
A report commissioned by the Dutch government in 2009 found that file-sharing has an overall positive effect on the Dutch economy, which is just as well since an estimated 30% of the population are believed to engage in the activity.
The decision of the ECJ will determine the continued legality ? or otherwise ? of downloading for personal use in the Netherlands, with the potential to affect millions.

Two Marines are facing criminal charges for allegedly urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters last year in Afghanistan and posing for unofficial photos with casualties, Marine officials announced on Monday.
The criminal charges are the first levied on anyone over the incident, which was recorded on video and circulated on YouTube.
The video, which showed Marines in full combat gear urinating on the bodies of three dead men, triggered widespread anger in Afghanistan early this year, with Afghan President Hamid Karzai calling the Marines' actions "inhuman."?Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he feared that the video could set back efforts to begin reconciliation talks with the Taliban.
The charged Marines, Staff Sergeants Joseph W. Chamblin and Edward W. Deptola, who were referred to trial by court martial, also face charges for failing to properly supervise junior Marines and failing to stop and report misconduct of junior Marines.?

The Marine Corps investigation showed that although the video was only circulated on the Internet in January, the incident actually took place on or around July 27, 2011, during a counter-insurgency operation in Afghanistan's Helmand province.?
The Marine Corps said on August 27 that three Marines pleaded guilty to charges over the video. But their punishment fell short of criminal prosecution.

Chamblin and Deptola, on the other hand, also face a series charges for failing to supervise junior Marines.
This includes simple things like failing to require them to wear protective equipment to more serious breaches, like failing to report the "negligent discharge" of a grenade launcher. Deptola is also charged with failing to stop the unnecessary damaging of Afghan compounds, the Marines said.
The Marines said there were other pending cases in the video investigation. They declined to elaborate on the incident in which the negligent actions took place.

After a lengthy investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Services,?Lt. Gen. Richard Mills, commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Va., made the decision to refer the cases to court martial, the Marine Corps Times reported.

Nixon won blue-collar votes for GOP with ?Checkers? speech
Liberals strain to understand why so many blue-collar whites have made their home in the Republican Party. Yes, the GOP better connects with this group on social and lifestyle levels. Still, with working people under so much economic strain these days, it seems odd that they'd let a culture war centered on emotion trump bread-and-butter concerns.
When did this all begin? A good answer is 60 years ago, when a Republican congressman named Richard Nixon gave the ?Checkers speech.?
The address ?foreshadowed the emergence of a new conservative populism in the U.S., emphasizing appeals to social and cultural ?identity' rather than economic interest,? Lee Huebner, a speechwriter in the Nixon White House, writes. Later publisher of The International Herald Tribune, Huebner explains the power and historic significance of the Checkers speech in an article appearing on theAtlantic.com.
Until Sept. 23, 1952, the Democratic Party had reigned as the undisputed workers' champion for bargaining rights, a minimum wage, Social Security and the like. Nixon's purpose in giving the speech was not to switch partisan loyalties but to save his political hide. Charges that he had illegally used a donors fund for traveling had endangered his quest to become Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's vice presidential running mate. The allegations were almost surely false. And Nixon's fund was similar to one used by the Democratic candidate, Adlai Stevenson (who didn't join the pile-on). Eisenhower's advisers, meanwhile, perhaps half believing the charges and never having warmed to Nixon's ways, left him to sink or swim on his own.
So Nixon decided to directly address the nation through the powerful new medium of television. He bought 30 minutes of airtime right after the popular ?Milton Berle Show,? then went on to make political and television history. A survey of leading communications scholars ranked this as the sixth-most important American speech of the 20th century.
In what critics called a ?financial striptease,? Nixon revealed every detail of his humble holdings. ?It isn't very much,? he said, ?but Pat and I have the satisfaction that every dime that we have got is honestly ours.? Pat didn't wear mink, he famously noted, but ?a respectable Republican cloth coat.?
He then made a corny vow to keep one gift. Someone had sent ?a little cocker spaniel dog? that his daughter named Checkers. ?Regardless of what they say about it,? he said, ?we're going to keep it.? Hence the ?Checkers? tag.
When Nixon was done, the switchboards lit up. An estimated 4 million people called or wrote, nearly all in favor of Nixon. Eisenhower embraced him.
?He accomplished the goal by identifying himself not only with the circumstances of ?ordinary' Americans,? Huebner writes, ?but also with their resentments of the fancy and facile elite.? The New Deal Democratic coalition faced its doom.
?I am struck by the fact that the Nixon people rarely talked about the Checkers speech ? President Nixon included,? Huebner said. It was a harsh memory, in part because of the ?Checkers? label, which seemed to reduce the effort to marketing spin.
Can Democrats recapture the blue-collar hearts they began losing 60 years ago? Perhaps. The very real declining fortunes of whites without college degrees could again make economic security their prime concern. Nothing stays the same.

In a now familiar global ritual, Apple fans jammed shops across the globe to pick up the tech juggernaut's latest iPhone.
Eager buyers formed long lines Friday at Apple Inc. stores in Asia, Europe and North America to be the first to get their hands on the latest version of the smartphone.
In New York, several hundred people lined up outside Apple's 5th Avenue store. Jimmy Peralta, a 30-year-old business management student, waited three hours before getting the chance to buy his new gadget. Was it worth the wait?
"Definitely," he said, noting that the new phone's larger screen and lighter weight compelled him to upgrade from the iPhone 4. "A little treat for me on a Friday morning, why not. Why not be part of something fantastic? It's just such a smart phone it does all the thinking for you, you can't get any easier than that."
Catheryne Caveed, 23, was in line at a Verizon store in the Queens borough of New York. An iPhone 4 user, she had no regrets about skipping last year's model, the iPhone 4S. The only real upgrade in the 4S, she said, was Siri, the voice-controlled "personal assistant."
"The 4S looked the same as the 4," Caveed said. With the 5, "everything is different ? even the headphones."
Apple's stock closed up $1.39, or 0.2 percent, at $700.09. The stock surpassed the $700 level for the first time earlier this week, as excitement for the launch mounted.
For Apple, the iPhone introduction is the biggest revenue driver of the year. Analysts expect the company to sell millions of phones in the first few days. This spring, iPhone sales slowed down from their historical growth rates, apparently because potential buyers were holding off for the arrival of the "5."
Apple now needs to sell tens of millions of phones before the end of the year to justify its position as the world's most valuable public company. Although Samsung Electronics Inc. of Korea sells more smartphones, Apple's iPhone profits are far greater.
In London, some shoppers had camped out for a week in a queue that snaked around the block. In Hong Kong, the first customers were greeted by staff cheering, clapping, chanting "iPhone 5! iPhone 5!" and high-fiving them as they were escorted one-by-one through the front door.
The smartphone went on sale in the U.S. and Canada hours after its launch in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Britain, France and Germany. It will launch in 22 more countries next week. The iPhone 5 is thinner, lighter, has a taller screen, faster processor, updated software and can work on faster "fourth generation" mobile networks.
The handset has become a hot seller despite a new map app that early users have deemed inferior to Google Maps, the software it replaces. Apple received 2 million orders in the first 24 hours of announcing its release date, more than twice the number for the iPhone 4S in the same period when that phone launched a year ago.
In a sign of the intense demand, police in Osaka, Japan, were investigating the theft of nearly 200 iPhones 5s, including 116 from one shop alone, Kyodo News reported. In London, police sought help finding a man wanted in connection with the theft of 252 iPhone 5s from a shop in Wimbledon early Friday morning.
Analysts have estimated Apple will ship as many as 10 million of the new iPhones by the end of September.
Some fans went to extremes to be among the first buyers by arriving at Apple's flagship stores day ahead of the release.
In downtown Sydney, Todd Foot, 24, showed up three days early to nab the coveted first spot. He spent about 18 hours a day in a folding chair, catching a few hours' sleep each night in a tent on the sidewalk.
Foot's dedication was largely a marketing stunt, however. He writes product reviews for a technology website that will give away the phone after Foot reviews it.
"I just want to get the phone so I can feel it, compare it and put it on our website," he said while slumped in his chair.
In Paris, the phone launch was accompanied by a workers' protest ? a couple dozen former and current Apple employees demonstrated peacefully to demand better work benefits. Some decried what they called Apple's transformation from an offbeat company into a multinational powerhouse.
But the protesters ? urged by a small labor union to demonstrate at Apple stores around France ? were far outnumbered by lines of would-be buyers on the sidewalk outside the store near the city's gilded opera house.
Not everyone lining up at the various Apple stores was an enthusiast, though. In Hong Kong, university student Kevin Wong, waiting to buy a black 16 gigabyte model for 5,588 Hong Kong dollars ($720), said he was getting one "for the cash." He planned to immediately resell it to one of the numerous grey market retailers catering to mainland Chinese buyers. China is one of Apple's fastest growing markets but a release date for the iPhone 5 there has not yet been set.
Wong was required to give his local identity card number when he signed up for his iPhone on Apple's website. The requirement prevents purchases by tourists including mainland Chinese, who have a reputation for scooping up high-end goods on trips to Hong Kong because there's no sales tax and because of the strength of China's currency. Even so, the mainlanders will probably buy it from the resellers "at a higher price ? a way higher price," said Wong, who hoped to make a profit of HK$1,000 ($129).
A similar money-making strategy was being pursued in London, where many in the crowds ? largely from the city's extensive Asian community ? planned to either send the phones to family and friends back home as gifts or sell them in countries where they are much more expensive.
"It makes a really nice gift to family back home," said Muhammad Alum, 30, a minicab driver from Bangladesh. "It will be two or three weeks before there is a SIM card there that can work it, but it's coming soon."
Others who had waited overnight said the iPhones cost roughly twice as much in India as in Britain, making them very welcome as gifts.
Tokyo's glitzy downtown Ginza district not only had a long line in front of the Apple store, but another across the main intersection at Softbank, the first carrier in Japan to offer iPhones.
Hidetoshi Nakamura, a 25-year-old auto engineer, said he's an Apple fan because it's an innovator.
"I love Apple," he said, standing near the end of a two-block-long line, reading a book and listening to music on his iPod.
"It's only the iPhone for me."

Match Making For Boomers: Sex Kills Love
We want to believe that by having sex, we're "making love" and so many people talk about "making love" to describe their sexual encounters or acts.
Love is the element that makes the world go round and it literally does just that; not sex. Love-energy is the component that causes everything live to exist and without it we cannot and won't exist. Since we now know, from research and previous articles that "sex is not love," sex in reality kills the love that is supposed to be all over - the love that we should experience toward special people in our lives, toward living entities in our lives and toward our "neighbors."
Sex especially kills the potential growth of love in a man, because a man can only grow love and get in touch with his feelings when sex is kept away from him - kept out of the relationship for the correct period of time while the couple get to know each other, are busy interacting to become compatible with one another, to understand each other, to grow love to full capacity and to become tolerant of one another. All these things take time and when we go against nature and the creation things just don't work anymore. We were not created to have sex first, then fall in love and lastly get married. It just doesn't work that way around as that is the wrong way around.
If we want to have a platonic relationship-bond with another in a supposedly special relationship such as a life-partnership or marriage, we can have sex with any person we so choose, just the way men thought it could be done for centuries, even millenniums. On the other hand of we want the bond between life-partners to be meaningful and deep, the only way to achieve that, would be to grow love and not sexual experience, pleasure or infatuation. In other words, the focus should be on love and not on sex!
When we, males and females, have sex, the focus is on what the sex provide us with and not on how we actually feel. A female could believe she has met her true love, when in reality she only made an emotional connection due to the sex, trapping her in something she shouldn't even be a part of. A male on the other hand, never gets to that level of love, being unable to connect with his true feelings when sex is a part of the relationship, as there isn't a necessity to reach that level of love, since what he was supposed to get as a reward for getting in contact with his true feelings and experiencing true deep love, he got in the beginning.
There are always the exceptions; where people fall in love deeply in a very short while and whose love last a lifetime, but these are usually superiorly secure and whole people, able to develop their love at super speed. The rest of us fairly normal people need time to properly and entirely fall in love, not to mention, to get to know a potential life-partner completely-inside and out.
There are people who get married by way of an arranged marriage and there are people who choose to marry before knowing the other party well or even before having any feelings for the other. This could only work if both parties are wholly secure and know within, they are able to love any person who treats them with dignity and respect, who behaves well and who contributes rather contaminate. This way the souls are joined together first through the vows; and the unifications in the spirit-world is strong enough to withstand any challenge and obstacle. The moral of the story here again is love. Only when two people are secure, which means "already filled with love" to contribute the love to the relationship, could an arranged-marriage succeed and in most cases it does. The reason for this is that the parents are so involved in their child's life, which provides the security and love that the child could get married to any individual, the parents have chosen and make a success of it. Parents choose out of logic and not as a result of misconstrued emotional actions and feelings, something that happens to people all over the globe when sex is involved.
People have such a yearning to be secured somewhere and since most people confuse sex with love, they have sex with the wrong people and then force marriage or a life-partnership when it wasn't supposed to happen.
When sex is brought into a relationship, it stops the development of love, as sex is the reward to an established and secure relationship and not the start of creating a relationship. Sex can never be used as foundation for a secure relationship, yet many try to and even after realizing the mistake, they still try to force it to be this way. Sex is the declaration and visible act, proving to belong to another, another soul, not in legal terms or in theory, but by action. The problem here is that many millions of people don't support love and the development of love, but rather sex that would ultimately result in the destruction of experiencing true love.
We are in a trap of socially acceptable sex, approved drugs, artificial consumables (food and beverages), synthetic clothing, misconstrued beliefs and religions, and false relationships, but sex is the act that removes the most important experience of it all-the experience of love. Once love ceases to exist, there will be no need for physical existence and life anymore.

The history of online auctions is a chequered one. It goes all the way back to the dawn of the internet. To tell the story accurately, we must travel all the way back to the birth of the internet. And when we say the birth of the internet, we do mean the birth.
Many people would look back at online auctions as we know them today and think of them as a fairly modern technological development. Well, you would only be half right. You see, the online auctions that we know and use today actually have their origins in the days even before the first internet browser was invented.
Online auctions first began almost as soon as the internet was invented. Granted, they weren?t exactly the online auctions that we all know and love today, but they were online auctions none the less. These auctions would be held predominantly via email discussion and other text based mediums which utilised the internet as a new found connection device.
The first modern day recognisable versions of online auctions however were not seen until around the year 1995. At this point in the history of auctions, some of the major auctioneering powerhouses that we know today were born. This was at a time when the internet was still in its young days, and the technology which made this form of online bidding available was still what many computer scientists at the time considered proprietary technology.
Undeterred by the mammoth nature of what they had undertaken, these online auction pioneers continued with their mission to change the way we shop forever. They saw a future where goods of all shapes, sizes and prices, would be openly available for anyone and everyone to place a bid on. This bidding process meant that the general public were offered the chance to get their hands on some bargain deals. It also meant that people had, for the first time ever, been given an opportunity to voice their opinions and state what they considered to be a fair price for all of the items they would ever consider buying. If the bidding became too heated and prices exceeded what one particular bidder was prepared to pay, he or she could simply drop out of the bidding process and not be liable to pay out any money. These very first online bidding websites gave the public the chance to take back control from the retailers. It was the start of an online shopping revolution which would continue to empower buyers for years to come.

Microsoft resurrects Courier through Project Austin app for Windows 8, sparks nostalgia (video)
Many who've been following Microsoft's tablet efforts for years will have a soft spot for the Courier, a creative-focused device axed because it didn't fit the Windows puzzle. However, it looks like you just can't keep a clever idea down. Developers at Microsoft have revived the dream through Project Austin, a Windows 8 app based around the visual concept of a notebook. Pen aficionados can choose different paper types and paste in photos, but they're deliberately kept away from typing, searching and other elements that would complicate the idea. It should sound familiar: it's a rough (if possibly unintentional) Windows doppelganger to FiftyThree's Paper for iPad, which itself was designed by some of the former Courier team. A company spokesperson won't say if or when Project Austin will be available in a complete form for the public, although there's not much point until Windows 8 arrives on October 26th. Thankfully, programmers keen to see what Courier might have been -- if just in bits and pieces -- can already download the source code for themselves.

5 die in small plane crash in Missouri
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) ? A small plane has crashed in Missouri, killing the owners of two businesses and three children.
Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman Jason Pace told the Springfield News-Leader (http://sgfnow.co/RURydx ) that the plane went down about 12:30 a.m. Saturday near the town of Willard.
He says the plane appeared to have been headed toward the Springfield airport when it crashed. Troopers are securing the scene until investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration arrive.
Pace identified those killed as 44-year-old John Lambert, 46-year-old Robin Melton, 10-year-old Joshua Lambert, 15-year-old McKinley Lambert and 16-year-old Grayson Lambert. Pace says John Lambert was piloting the plane.
Lambert owned Missouri Insulation & Supply Inc., while Melton owned an environmental consulting firm called Environmental Works Inc.

Bring a sturdy pair of walking shoes
Getting around Bangkok is easy. Cabs, trains, motorcycles, and tuktuks are everywhere. Still, I think that if you really want to discover the place ? from Chatuchak Market to Khao San Road to the side streets in between ? you will be doing a whole lot of walking. Make sure your feet are nice and comfy by bringing along your favorite pair of walking shoes, and then treat them to an hour-long Thai foot massage at night!
